One-on-one with Laith

When he’s not pursuing a career in journalism, you can find Laith shooting hoops on the basketball court. Laith made a game plan with his healthcare team and switched to an every-4-day dosing schedule with ELOCTATE.

Q&A

How did you hear about ELOCTATE?

My doctor and I have a great relationship. He knew a steady prophy schedule would work for me, and after talking it over I decided he was right.

How have you felt since making the transition to ELOCTATE?

I feel good about my choice. It’s the extended half-life. Every time I infuse, I know I’m doing right by my health and I get the space to explore my passions.

What are you exploring now?

I moved to New York, getting my master’s degree, and working as an intern at The Atlantic, that’s pretty exciting. But I always make time to hoop it up.

Sounds like a busy schedule.

It is. But as long as I’m staying on top of my treatment, I don’t mind.

ryan goes
with the
flow

Ryan's life has been full of twists and turns but he believes every detour has made him unique, like a work of art.

His latest detour; a new doctor who worked with Ryan to switch him to an every-4-day prophy regimen with ELOCTATE.

Q&A

What makes you unique?

My bow tie collection for one thing. Bow ties are just so distinctive. I just had to have more.

What led you to ELOCTATE?

I had been tracking the progress of ELOCTATE for a while. Its extended protection* was something that caught my eye. When my new hematologist suggested it, I wanted to give it a try.

How is your new treatment working out?

I'm happy where I am now with treatment. I infuse with ELOCTATE every four days and, so far, that's worked for me. I've only had a few minor bleeds and zero hospitalizations. But that's just my experience. Everyone is different.

Is there anything you've learned?

It took me 28 years to be proactive and learn to self-infuse, just because I was stubborn. But I did and that's kept me moving forward to the next thing that's waiting around the next turn!

Jenny AND Paxton dive in

Paxton is a little guy with big goals. That’s because his mom, Jenny, has encouraged him to take ownership of his condition and be proactive with his treatment by choosing ELOCTATE.

Q&A

What attracted you to ELOCTATE?

I was really intrigued by its extended half-life, and how beneficial a steady prophy schedule can be.

How’s he doing on ELOCTATE?

We're so happy. He's always on the go, but ELOCTATE has been working really well for him. But everyone is different, and that's just his experience.

What’s Paxton been up to lately?

All sorts of stuff. He rides his bike. He’s reading and doing math. He loves goofing around with his little sister.

We heard he’s a big swimmer too

Absolutely. He’s like a dolphin when he gets into the pool. But really, every day he’s trying something new. It’s great to see him dive in and take on new challenges.

kenny stays on the path

As an avid cyclist with Hemophilia A, Kenny has known uphill struggles, both literally and figuratively.

Kenny's every-5-day prophy regimen with ELOCTATE keeps him peddling.

Q&A

Why is family important to you?

I was put up for adoption as a newborn. My first adoptive family returned me to the orphanage when I was diagnosed with Hemophilia A. My second adoptive family was more accepting, so I grew up in a supportive, loving home. It's made me appreciate my own wife and kids that much more.

How did you hear about ELOCTATE?

I like to get involved and give back to the hemophilia community. I learned about ELOCTATE through my volunteering. Its extended protection* seemed promising.

And how is the switch to ELOCTATE working out?

I worked with my doctor to come up with a prophy infusion schedule of every four days. The protection I'm getting helps keep me biking, hiking, keeping active any way I can. This is just my experience.

Any words of wisdom?

I tell my kids: "Don't worry about what you can't control, worry about what you can control."

DJ is in the building

DJ is a guy who always marches to his own beat. Maybe that’s why drums are his instrument of choice.

As for his Hemophilia A therapy, DJ chose ELOCTATE.

Q&A

So your name’s DJ but you play the drums?

Exactly. I like to keep people on their toes.

Any other hobbies?

I love comic books and I’m learning how to illustrate my own characters. It’s a great creative outlet.

What would your superpower be?

Supersonic speed. Or maybe flight. I haven’t decided.

Speaking of decisions, how did you decide on your current dosing regimen?

I have great communication with my healthcare team. We worked together and eventually my doctor helped me start an every-4-day infusion routine. It’s been a great fit so far.

What’s next for you?

Right now, I’m going with the flow. I may have hemophilia, but that does not mean I have to play quietly.

Lane loves a challenge

Competitive running helped Lane get through high school and get into college.

Choosing ELOCTATE for his Hemophilia A treatment felt like another accomplishment.

Q&A

When did you discover your passion for running?

As a sophomore in high school, I snagged a spot on the varsity team and took home all kinds of titles and awards. The whole team relied on me which meant I had to start being more proactive about my health. That’s about the same time I heard about ELOCTATE.

What happened next?

I went over ELOCTATE clinical trials with my doctor and I was immediately intrigued by the possibility of extended protection*. We decided to begin prophylactically infusing every four days, eventually working with my doctor to extend my infusion schedule up to every 5 days.

And how has that worked out so far?

Since then, I haven’t had any spontaneous bleeds. We feel like I’m getting the protection I need when competing on the track. This has been my experience, but I know everyone is different.

Has hemophilia taught you anything?

There was a time when I figured hemophilia would define me forever. But I’ve run my heart out, proving to myself that with a little dedication, Hemophilia A doesn’t have to hold me back from who I am and who I want to be.

Proud to be old school

Craig is a writer and performer who refuses to let Hemophilia A tell his life story for him.

Switching to ELOCTATE helped Craig start a new chapter in his treatment journey.

Q&A

You are a self-described passionate man, explain.

I’m passionate about fairness and equality. I grew up with Hemophilia A feeling like I was treated differently, like I was sometimes judged. I’m also passionate about my creativity and restoring old cars.

How did you feel when your doctor suggested ELOCTATE?

I approached my switch to ELOCTATE the same way I approach life—with a sense of possibility.

What do you like about ELOCTATE?

I feel ELOCTATE offers me the protection* I need to explore the passions I have.

And what’s in store for your next chapter?

I like to talk to other people about Hemophilia A, at conferences, one-on-one and I’m constantly moved by the way my stories affect other people, the way they touch other people.

Chet and Caleb are making it work

With no known history of hemophilia in their family, Caleb’s diagnosis caught Chet by surprise.

But Chet refused to let that get in the way of their dreams. And that’s where ELOCTATE came in.

Q&A

How has Caleb’s condition affected him?

We try to keep limitations on Caleb’s life to a minimum. He’s on the high school basketball team with a pretty heavy schedule. We worked with our doctor to determine if being on the basketball team was appropriate.

Where did you find out about ELOCTATE?

One of the doctors at our local HTC thought ELOCTATE’s extended dosing regimen would work for Caleb’s athletic schedule.

And how is ELOCTATE working out?

We worked with his doctor and now Caleb infuses every 4 days during the basketball season, every 5 days in the off season.

What has your experience with Caleb taught you?

Never be afraid to chase your dreams just because you have a bleeding disorder.

Meet Jonathan

Jonathan is widely known as “the car guy,” and rightly so. But when he’s not detailing a hot rod, he’s studying the details of his Hemophilia A treatment. That’s why he worked with his doctor, and made the switch from ADVATE® to ELOCTATE.

Q&A

How long have you been working on cars?

When I was a kid, my grandfather had a mechanic shop. I fell in love, and the rest is history.

What about ELOCTATE led you to switch from ADVATE®?

What intrigued me was the extended half-life and the possibility of an infusion schedule up to five days. I mean, everybody is different, but once I worked with my doctor I realized this was the best choice for me.

How’s it working out for you, so far?

It’s great. I went from infusing every other day on my previous factor to infusing every 4 days on ELOCTATE. And I’m working with my healthcare team to extend to every 5 days. But kinda like cars, each one of us is a different make, a different model, and requires different, specialized care.

So, what’s next for “the car guy”?

I once built a car from scratch. It might be time for a new one.

Allergic reactions may occur. Call your healthcare provider or emergency department right away if you have any of the following symptoms: difficulty breathing, chest tightness, swelling of the face, rash or hives.

Your body can also make antibodies called "inhibitors" against ELOCTATE. This can stop ELOCTATE from working properly. Your healthcare provider may give you blood tests to check for inhibitors.

THE MOST COMMON SIDE EFFECTS OF ELOCTATE INCLUDE: headache, rash, joint pain, muscle pain and general discomfort. These are not all the possible side effects of ELOCTATE. Talk to your healthcare provider for more information and about any side effect that bothers you or does not go away.

WHAT SHOULD I TELL MY HEALTHCARE PROVIDER BEFORE STARTING ELOCTATE?

Tell your healthcare provider about all your health conditions, including if you:

  • Have or have had any medical problems.
  • Are taking any prescription and non-prescription medicines, such as over-the-counter medicines, supplements, or herbal medicines.
  • Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. It is not known if ELOCTATE may harm your unborn baby.
  • Are breastfeeding. It is not known if ELOCTATE passes into breast milk or if it can harm your baby.

AFTER STARTING ELOCTATE:

If your bleeding is not controlled and you experience a lack of clinical response to Factor VIII therapy, call your healthcare provider right away.

Medicines are sometimes prescribed for purposes other than those listed here. Do not use ELOCTATE for a condition for which it was not prescribed. Do not share ELOCTATE with other people, even if they have the same symptoms that you have.

ELOCTATE INDICATIONS

ELOCTATE is an injectable medicine that is used to help control and prevent bleeding in people with Hemophilia A (congenital Factor VIII deficiency).

Your healthcare provider may give you ELOCTATE when you have surgery.

HOW SHOULD I RECEIVE ELOCTATE?

ELOCTATE should be administered as ordered by your healthcare provider. You should be trained on how to do infusions by your healthcare provider. Many people with hemophilia A learn to infuse ELOCTATE by themselves or with the help of a family member. See the booklet called "Instructions for Use" packaged in your ELOCTATE for directions on infusing. If you are unsure of the procedure, please ask your healthcare provider.

IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT ELOCTATE
