With no known history of hemophilia in their family, Caleb’s diagnosis caught Chet by surprise.
But Chet refused to let that get in the way of their dreams.
*ELOCTATE has been proven to help patients prevent bleeding episodes using a prophylaxis regimen.
See TranscriptHow has Caleb’s condition affected him?
We try to keep limitations on Caleb’s life to a minimum. He’s really passionate about staying active and keeps a pretty heavy schedule.
Where did you find out about ELOCTATE?
One of the doctors at our local HTC thought ELOCTATE’s dosing regimen would give Caleb the bleed and joint bleed protection* he needs and also work well with his schedule.
And how is ELOCTATE working out?
We worked with his doctor and now Caleb infuses every 4 days when he plays sports, every 5 days when he's not playing. ELOCTATE prophy is bleed protection* he can count on.
What has your experience with Caleb taught you?
Never be afraid to chase your dreams just because you have a bleeding disorder.

Chet:
We put a ball in his hand when he was maybe three or four and he hasn’t put the ball down since. Caleb is a great kid. He is a senior in high school. Diagnosed at one, so it's always been his reality. Basketball is— it’s his thing. I'm Chet. I'm from Ohio. I'm 52 years old. I'm married with two kids. My son Caleb has severe hemophilia A but it’s never slowed him down.
When we first started thinking about switching to ELOCTATE, we had the same kind of hesitations that you might anytime you switch a factor product. Our doctor did warn us about some of the potential side effects, including joint pain and general discomfort, but we talked to our whole healthcare team, and they answered all our questions, reassured us, and we went ahead. When we started with ELOCTATE and we started talking to our doctor about it, he told us that the recommended infusion schedule was every four days with the option to go three to five. And when we started, we decided that five days worked best for him— four days when he's heavy activity.
I think the most appealing thing about ELOCTATE was the schedule. It worked for Caleb's activity level, and it worked for his schedule. In addition to the less frequent infusions, the fact that he's done really well on it has kind of helped. I mean he's a really active kid, and the success that we've had with ELOCTATE has really eased our minds. This is our experience, and how things have worked out for us, and everyone's experience is different. So, it's important to talk to your healthcare team and your doctor.
I think if there's one thing that I can tell parents especially parents facing a new diagnosis is what are your goals? And what is most important to you? And then sit down with your doctor and your whole health care team and figure out what's best for you and your family to meet those goals. Hey, you can do this.
I hope that I've taught him to be a good man. I hope I've taught him to be honest and kind and caring — thoughtful — all of those positive things you want your kid to take away from his time at home and make into the person he is as an adult. I see Caleb on the path to what he wants to do and who he wants to be for the rest of his life. His bleeding disorder is a big part of his life, but it's not all of his life. He's no different than any other 17-year-old kid in that regard. We all think that ELOCTATE has worked out really well for Caleb. It's his life. It's his ELOCTATE.

Tell your healthcare provider if you have or have had any medical problems, take any medicines, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, supplements, or herbal medicines, have any allergies, are breastfeeding, are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or have been told you have inhibitors (antibodies) to Factor VIII.
Allergic reactions may occur with ELOCTATE. Call your healthcare provider or get emergency treatment right away if you have any of the following symptoms: difficulty breathing, chest tightness, swelling of the face, rash, or hives.
Your body can also make antibodies called "inhibitors" against ELOCTATE, which may stop ELOCTATE from working properly.
Additional common side effects of ELOCTATE are headache, rash, joint pain, muscle pain and general discomfort.
If you have risk factors for developing abnormal blood clots in your body, such as an indwelling venous catheter, treatment with Factor VIII may increase this risk.
These are not all the possible side effects of ELOCTATE. Talk to your healthcare provider right away about any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away, or if bleeding is not controlled after using ELOCTATE.
